In a programme financed by Diageo, the world’s biggest alcohol firm, women will be lectured on the dangers of drinking alcohol during pregnancy.
Behind drinks like Guinness, Baileys and Smirnoff Ice, Diageo will support the programme by paying £4 million for mid-wives to inform expectant mothers to avoid alcohol, which they already are aware of.
According to a spokesman, the drinks industry funding the health campaign made it essential that independent advice be sought.
Diageo’s promise to fund is part of the Government’s ‘responsibility deal’ for encouraging big business, charities and retailers to help change behaviour and back policies. The funds will go towards face-to-face training for mid-wives, as well as, a new online course, surveys and a distance-learning package.
